Uploading an SVG to Cricut Design Space takes about thirty seconds once you know where the button is. The steps below cover the desktop app and the mobile app, then work through the problems that actually come up: layers that will not separate, designs that import at the wrong size, and files the app refuses to open.
You do not need Cricut Access for any of this. SVG upload works on the free plan.
Before you start
Unzip the download first. Cricut Design Space cannot read a ZIP file, and this is the single most common reason an upload fails. Every download here arrives as a ZIP containing the SVG along with PNG, DXF, and JPG versions, so extract the folder and find the file ending in .svg.
On Windows, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. On Mac, double-click it. On iPhone or iPad, tap the ZIP in the Files app and it expands into a folder of the same name.
Uploading on desktop
- Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project, or open an existing canvas.
- In the left toolbar, click Upload.
- Click Upload Image, then Browse, and pick the unzipped
.svgfile. You can also drag the file straight onto the window. - Design Space shows a preview. Give it a name and tags if you want to find it again easily, then click Upload.
- The design lands in your Recent Uploads grid at the bottom. Select it and click Add to Canvas.
That is the whole flow. Because an SVG is a vector, it arrives on the canvas with its layers and colors intact, and it will scale to any size without going fuzzy.
Uploading on the mobile app
- Open a project and tap Upload in the bottom toolbar.
- Tap Browse Files and navigate to the unzipped folder in your Files app.
- Select the
.svg, name it, and tap Save. - Tap the design in Recent Uploads, then Add to Canvas.
The mobile app hides the file browser behind Browse Files rather than a drag target, which is the step most people miss. If the folder does not appear, the ZIP has not been expanded yet.
Working with the design once it is on the canvas
Separating the layers. Select the design and click Ungroup in the Layers panel. A well-built SVG comes in as a group of separately colored layers, so ungrouping lets you cut each one from a different cardstock. Ungroup once for the top-level group; some layered designs need a second ungroup on a sub-group.
Resizing. Select the whole design before you resize, and leave the lock icon closed so width and height scale together. If you resize one layer at a time, the pieces stop lining up. For a layered design, set the overall size first and the layers stay in register.
Changing colors. Colors in the file are just a guide for which pieces cut from which sheet. Select a layer, click the colored square next to Operation, and set it to whatever material you are actually using.
Welding and attaching. Use Attach to hold pieces in position on the mat. Use Weld only when you want to permanently fuse shapes into one, which is useful for joined script lettering and destructive everywhere else.
When the upload does not work
The file is still zipped. Extract it first. This accounts for most failures.
You picked the PNG by mistake. A PNG uploads through the same button but arrives as a flat image, so it has no separate layers and Design Space will walk you through a background-removal step. If you want cut lines, choose the file ending in .svg.
The design imports enormous or tiny. SVG files do not always carry a physical size, so Design Space guesses. Set the width you want in the size box on the top toolbar and the rest follows.
Everything is one solid shape. The design was flattened before it was saved. Try the DXF version instead, which carries the outlines separately, then recolor after importing.
Using a Silhouette rather than a Cricut. Silhouette Studio imports SVG directly only on Designer Edition. On the free version, use the DXF from the same download. Our format guide covers which file to reach for on each machine.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Cricut Access to upload an SVG? No. Uploading your own SVG files works on the free Cricut Design Space plan. Cricut Access is a subscription to Cricut's own image and font library, and it has no bearing on files you upload yourself.
Why will Cricut Design Space not open my SVG? In almost every case the file is still inside a ZIP folder. Design Space cannot read a ZIP, so extract it first and select the file ending in .svg. If it still fails, confirm you are choosing the SVG rather than the PNG or JPG.
How do I separate the layers of an SVG in Cricut? Select the design on the canvas and click Ungroup in the Layers panel. Each colored layer then becomes its own object you can cut from a different sheet. Some layered designs are nested, so you may need to ungroup a second time.
Why does my SVG upload at the wrong size? SVG files do not always specify a physical size, so Design Space assigns one. Select the whole design, then type the width you want into the size field in the top toolbar with the lock closed so the proportions hold.
Can I upload an SVG on the Cricut mobile app? Yes. Tap Upload, then Browse Files, and pick the unzipped SVG from your device's Files app. The design saves to Recent Uploads and adds to the canvas the same way it does on desktop.
What is the difference between the SVG and DXF in my download? Both are vector files you can cut. SVG is the one to use on Cricut and on Silhouette Designer Edition, and it keeps layers and colors. DXF carries the cut outlines but usually drops fills, and it is the one to use on the free version of Silhouette Studio.
